How Does Filing Insurance Work?

First and foremost, I am a psychologist with extensive training in mental health, and I have subsequently taught myself how to file insurance claims. Unlike most mental health facilities, I do my own billing, and I don’t outsource it to third-party agencies. This is better for your privacy and assures that I’m the only person who has access to your psychotherapy notes and personal health information. If you are in-network with Aetna, Aetna SHP, BCBS, Medcost, or Meritain Health, I will file the claim on your behalf. Insurance can be tricky, so I always encourage clients to call ahead and determine their financial responsibility before session. My general process is to file the claim, and I will wait for insurance to send an Explanation of Benefits. This will tell me your financial responsibility moving forwards. In my experience, most clients have a copayment of $0-$30, unless you have a deductible only plan. Once I know your co-payment, I will collect the co-payment on the date-of-service.
